It is written by Andrew Crofts, an English ghostwriter. Iqbal Masih was born in 1983 in Muridke, a commercial city outside of Lahore in Punjab, Pakistan, into a poor Christian family.

It is Iqbal who tells them that their family's debt will never be cancelled, no matter how many inches of progress they make in their rugs, no matter how neat the knots or perfect the pattern. But Iqbal escaped again after his ‘punishment’.

In 1982 a baby boy was born to Inayat Bibi and Saif Masih. They named him Iqbal Masih. Sometime after Iqbal’s birth, Saif Masih deserted the family. While Iqbal’s mother worked, his older sisters took care of him and his older siblings.

Iqbal was just four when his older brother was to be wed, and his mother borrowed money from a local "employer" to pay for the wedding. Iqbal was forced to work fourteen hours a day with a thirty minute break until he worked of his mothers debt of six hundred rupees (about twelve dollars). Iqbal Masih was born to Saif Masih, father, and Inayat Bibi, mother.
